Gender equality: a popular slogan

KARACHI:

According to the United Nations General Assembly, all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights, and everyone is entitled to all the rights and freedoms. However, in reality, this declaration has been overlooked.

Women face various socioeconomic and political inequalities across the world simply because they are women. In most regions of the world, they are even denied the right to life. Similarly, it is estimated that women face physical and psychological violence more than men. Schools, hospitals and economic sectors are replete with disparities, where women are often discriminated based on gender. For some, they are just commodities to maximise economic profits. Economically, they are paid less than men despite working the same hours on the job. Moreover, women are rarely seen in leadership roles. This demonstrates explicitly that the political arena is also gendered. The same trend is seen in legal and technological landscapes, where the majority of women do not have access to technological tools such as mobiles and computers, and are legally discriminated.

According to a 2020 World Bank report, 2.5 billion women live in countries with discriminatory laws. This makes it crystal clear that women are socially discriminated, economically deprived and politically marginalised. Thus, owing to gender inequality in almost every field, women have made gender equality a popular slogan.
