Saving justice

Saving justice

Social media has transformed not only in terms of how information is disseminated but also how it influences public perception and judicial decision-making. When information can travel at lightning speed, public opinion can also be shaped almost instantaneously, often leading to what has been termed “media trial”. We are in an era of fake news where misinformation and disinformation have endless potential to distort public understanding and influence judicial outcomes. This phenomenon poses a significant threat to the integrity of the legal system as judges may find themselves swayed by prevailing narratives.
As social media blurs the lines between personal and professional lives, judges must exercise caution in their online interactions. Posts intended for a limited audience can quickly spiral out of control, leading to public scrutiny that may compromise judicial credibility. There is no simple solution to mitigating the influence of social media on judicial decision-making. Instead judges must cultivate self-awareness and critical reflection regarding their interaction on digital platforms. The challenge lies in finding a balance between transparency and impartiality, and fostering an environment where justice prevails over sensationalism.
