Unplanned urbanisation

Unplanned urbanisation

The continued unplanned urbanisation and its resultant housing crisis in Karachi is quite alarming. As one of the most rapidly growing cities in the world, Karachi is experiencing an striking rate of migration from across the country. While this growth brings economic opportunities, it also causes significant challenges related to housing, infrastructure and basic services. Unplanned urbanisation has led to the development of informal settlements or slums in many parts of city. These settlements often lacking basic facilities such as clean water, sanitation and electricity. The rapid extension of such areas, without adequate planning or regulation, has strained the city’s already overburdened infrastructure.
The lack of affordable housing schemes is another problem. Due to high property rates, low income families reside in unsafe and overcrowded areas. To address this growing problem, it is essential for the government to focus on sustainable and planned urban development in collaboration with urban planners and developers.
The government must ensure specific zoning laws that are crucial to prevent further encroachment on environmentally sensitive areas or public spaces. We need a long-term vision that balances growth with sustainability ensuring that the city remains livable for all its residents. I call upon the authorities to address this issue through coordinated efforts, policy reforms and community involvement. Through well-structured and planned urbanisation, we can build a Karachi that meets the need of its growing population.
