The University of Karachi’s Centre of Excellence in Marine Biology is currently facing a critical challenge that reflects deeper systemic issues in academic management. A primary concern is the delay in salary disbursement affecting 42 faculty members and staff for over a year. This delay has caused significant financial and emotional distress, particularly for a senior associate professor with over 26 years of service.
The faculty’s grievances, including allegations of retaliatory actions and neglect for an esteemed faculty member, deserve immediate attention. The university acknowledges that such situations, while complex, must not undermine the morale or livelihood of those dedicated to academic progress.
Several factors contribute to the specific issue, including structural changes in the service status from Tenure Track System (TTS) to Basic Pay Scale (BPS) and vice versa, as well as lien adjustments due to departmental changes. Additionally, the shifting status of the Centre following decisions by the federal ministry has introduced further complications, creating administrative hurdles that require resolution.
We strongly believe that the university recognises the gravity of the faculty’s concerns and is committed to finding sustainable solutions. While the road to resolution may involve navigating bureaucratic and structural challenges, it is imperative that the institution ensures its educators’ dignity and well-being.
In response to the situation, the faculty has resorted to fundraising initiatives and announced plans for demonstrations. Such actions reflect their frustration, which the university administration deeply regrets. Constructive engagement and transparent communication are essential for resolving this crisis and preventing similar situations in the future.
We urge all stakeholders — government representatives, university officials, and the broader academic community — to collaborate in addressing these challenges. Education thrives on the dedication of its teachers, and it is our collective responsibility to uphold their rights and support their contributions.
By resolving these issues promptly and effectively, the University of Karachi can reaffirm its commitment to raising an environment of academic excellence and mutual respect.
