Coastal conservation

Coastal conservation

Pakistan’s coastal regions, particularly Karachi’s mangroves and Churna Island, face imminent environmental threats due to unchecked industrial activity and tourism. Mangroves, which serve as natural barriers against floods and as habitats for countless species, are being degraded for urban development. Similarly, Churna Island, a proposed marine protected area, suffers from pollution caused by careless tourists and waste from nearby industries.
These ecosystems are not just vital for mitigating the effects of climate change, such as rising sea levels and coastal erosion. If these areas are not preserved, the environmental and economic consequences will be disastrous.
It is commendable that steps are being taken to declare Churna Island a marine protected area. However, enforcement of conservation laws and public awareness campaigns are equally necessary. Stakeholders, including local communities, must be involved in conservation efforts to ensure sustainable development. Our coastal treasures cannot afford further neglect.
