Public transport in Karachi

Public transport in Karachi

The absence of a mass transit system in Karachi is impacting the lives of millions of residents of what is called the economic hub of Pakistan in several ways. The public transport system in the metropolis is outdated and insufficient to meet the needs of its rapidly growing population. The lack of reliable, efficient and affordable conveyance has forced many to rely on private vehicles or rickshaws and minibuses. The buses plying currently are congested, overcrowded and unsafe to travel. Besides causing traffic congestion on roads and an increase in incidents, the situation is also giving rise to air pollution and resulting in wastage of time and resources. While there have been some initiatives, such as the launch of work on Karachi Bus Rapid Transit and a limited revival of the Karachi Circular Railway, these projects have faced numerous delays and challenges.
Under the circumstances, Karachi urgently needs a comprehensive mass transit system that includes advanced buses, trains and metro system to meet the needs of its residents. The government should prioritise long-term investments in mass transit infrastructure, increase the number of buses and improve the overall management of the system. By improving the public transport system, we can address Karachi’s pressing challenges like traffic congestion, pollution and social inequality. I call upon the relevant authorities to take immediate and effective steps to improve the transport infrastructure in Karachi and provide the convenience of travelling in public transport.
