The smog situation in Lahore has reached dire levels, with air quality plunging to hazardous levels, making it nearly impossible to breathe. The city’s residents are facing a public health emergency as the toxic air continues to exacerbate respiratory illnesses, particularly among children and the elderly. Schools are being shut down, and hospitals are overwhelmed with cases related to air pollution.
The causes of this crisis are well-known, however, what is sorely lacking is a comprehensive response from the authorities. Sporadic measures, like temporary bans on crop burning and factory shutdowns, are mere band-aids.
We need a sustainable approach to combat this annual crisis. The government must implement stricter emissions standards. Additionally, a long-term plan to shift towards renewable energy sources and enforce environmental laws is crucial. If immediate action is not taken, Lahore’s air quality will continue to deteriorate, posing serious health risks to its population.
