KARACHI:
The relentless rise in inflation is pushing ordinary Pakistanis to the brink. In recent months, essential commodities have become unaffordable for the majority, and the cost of living has escalated to alarming levels. For a large segment of our population, each day brings new struggles — feeding families and securing basic healthcare are turning into Herculean tasks.
The government’s attempts to manage inflation through subsidies and economic reforms have proven insufficient. While officials claim that external factors, such as global commodity prices and the devaluation of the rupee, are driving this crisis, it is clear that domestic mismanagement also plays a significant role. Our reliance on imports coupled with high taxation and lack of support for local industries only intensifies the situation. Moreover, the recent energy tariff increases have made matters worse, with businesses closing due to high operational costs and unemployment rising as a result. Small business owners and daily wage earners are among the hardest hit, and yet they are the ones who receive the least government support.
A realisation must prevail that the crisis is both economic and social, one that threatens the stability of our society. The government must re-evaluate its policies and actively address the structural issues that fuel inflation.
