There is a pressing need for our society to treat individuals with disabilities with respect and dignity, recognising them as equal members of our community. People with disabilities frequently face challenges and biases that make daily life much harder than it should be. Unfortunately, instead of receiving support and empathy, they often encounter exclusion, rude behaviour and even public ridicule. One of the disturbing trends we see today is the circulation of “dark humor” on social media, where people make fun of the struggles faced by those with disabilities. This insensitive behaviour reflects a troubling lack of empathy in our society, particularly among younger generations. It is disheartening to witness how our society has normalised such cruelty, sidelining an entire demographic deserving of respect and compassion. Each individual, regardless of physical or mental condition, deserves respect and opportunities to lead fulfilling lives. Inclusion must go beyond mere words or symbolic gestures. It should translate into meaningful actions in everyday life.
People with disabilities should be considered for employment opportunities, given a fair shot at educational advancement, and welcomed in all areas of public life. They should not be seen as burdens, but rather as individuals with unique perspectives and talents that can enrich our communities and workplaces. Instead of pity or condescension, we should focus on creating environments that support them in reaching their full potential, offering resources that empower them rather than limit them.
