I have been residing in a government hostel located inside the University of Karachi, and want to highlight the security problems related to the University Road. Recently, a friend of mine, also living in the same hostel, was harassed by a group of men riding motorcycles while she was coming back from the gym. A few weeks ago, a student of an evening programme was robbed on the University Road near the main gate of the University of Karachi. This otherwise busy thoroughfare is in a horrible condition: there are no streetlights, no traffic cops, and no security at all. Students, especially female ones, avoid taking a pedestrian bridge near the university to cross the road for fear of being robbed or harassed. The overall security situation does not project a good images of one of the main roads of Karachi on which one of Pakistan’s largest public-sector university is located. The authorities must take an urgent notice.
