Yet another hike in the toll charges for Karachi’s Lyari Expressway is deeply frustrating. A drive through this expressway now costs Rs50. It feels like we’re being asked to pay more, but what for exactly? There’s still no improvement in services that should come with the higher cost.
The expressway requires repairs at various places and there’s no proper median fencing which forces people to cross dangerously through fast-moving traffic – which is life threatening. The police patrolling is also not up to the mark. Add to that the lack of proper lighting and security, and it’s a recipe for disaster, especially at night. On top of this, the expressway is dotted with beggars at different points which, while concerning from a social welfare perspective, is also a safety hazard.
People are paying more but receiving the same substandard service. If the NHA is collecting higher toll fees, the least it can do is provide a safer, smoother and more secure journey.
