Antarctica holds 61% of the planet’s freshwater in its ice. If all of this ice were to melt, global sea levels could rise by 60 meters, submerging coastal cities and erasing entire nations such as the Maldives and Bangladesh. Due to climate change, this alarming scenario is becoming increasingly real.
NASA’s GRACE satellite data shows that Antarctica is losing ice at an unprecedented rate of 150 billion tons per year, while Greenland is losing even more — 270 billion tons annually. This rapid ice loss is already raising sea levels, with five Pacific islands having disappeared. The devastating effects of climate change are undeniable and without urgent action, many countries could face catastrophic consequences as rising seas reshape our world.
