KARACHI:
Drug addiction has become a serious social issue in Pakistan, particularly among the youth. Over the years, there has been a disturbing rise in the consumption of narcotics such as heroin, methamphetamine (commonly known as ice) and synthetic drugs, with universities and educational institutions being no exception.
The easy availability of these substances, coupled with a lack of awareness and limited rehabilitation options, has left countless young people trapped in the vicious cycle of addiction. This growing menace not only affects the health and well-being of individuals but also has far-reaching consequences on families and society. Mental health issues are all on the rise as addiction continues to spread. The stigma associated with seeking help further compounds the problem, with many individuals feeling isolated and without support.
The government must take swift and decisive action by implementing stricter laws to curb drug trafficking and investing in rehabilitation centers that offer both medical and psychological support. Parents, educators and the society at large also have a critical role in addressing this issue through open communication and guiding our youth toward healthier lifestyles.
