Rampant diabetes

Pakistan is currently witnessing an alarming surge in diabetes cases, with the situation threatening to spiral out of control. According to the International Diabetic Federation, around 33 million people in Pakistan are living with diabetes, placing them at high risk for related cardiovascular diseases. This reflects a broader failure of the healthcare system to effectively address this chronic illness.
Several factors have contributed to the rising incidence of diabetes in Pakistan. First, there is a widespread lack of awareness about the disease. Many people do not recognise the seriousness of diabetes and therefore fail to seek early diagnosis or treatment. This ignorance exacerbates the problem, as lack of treatment can lead to severe complications. Second, unhealthy dietary habits are prevalent across the country, with many people consuming diets high in sugars and unhealthy fats, further contributing to the increase in diabetes cases. Third, the failure of policymakers to develop and implement effective healthcare policies has also played a role in the rise of this disease.
To tackle this growing health crisis, the government must launch public awareness campaigns, especially in rural areas, to educate people about the dangers of diabetes and the importance of early diagnosis. Furthermore, policymakers need to step up and take concrete measures to overhaul the healthcare system. Result-oriented policies must be formulated to address not just diabetes but other chronic diseases that are becoming increasingly common.
