In the backdrop of unilateral aggression committed by Israel, the entire Middle East seems to be entering a dangerous phase of socio-economic nosedive. The recent Israeli incursion on Lebanon is a clear testament to this fact, which needs to resolved before the situations get out of hand.
In the wake of the assassination of the Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrullah, Iran, as a form of revenge, has fired 180 ballistic missiles on Tel Aviv, making the predicament further compounded. In response, Netanyahu’s regime along with the United States has promised to launch a major counter offensive against Tehran and its proxies, which will extremely fan the flames of a regional war and elude peace. Before this escalation translates into a reality, the UN has to play an important role to de-escalate the tensions immediately. It needs to emphasise both the warring parties to adhere to the International Accords. Besides, the Biden administration must be stopped from dispatching military assistance to Israel, because it is tantamount to triggering war over diplomacy. In pursuit of peace, the monopoly of the US on diffusing peaceful resolutions, that are aimed to bring restraint, should be kept at bay.
As several attempts were made to maintain peace in the ravaged Gaza City, the US stepped in the same time by vetoing these positive efforts, encouraging Israel to carry on its genocidal actions. Hence, the UN must take mature and brave steps to avert such one-sided decisions against establishing peace and calm, further it should issue warnings of termination of membership in any case of proliferating escalation over dialogue.
