The invention of lamps revolutionised urban life, illuminating every corner and making public spaces brighter. This innovation brought about a new profession — the lamp lighter. Their primary responsibility was to ensure that lamps were lit and extinguished daily, providing a sense of security and warmth to the community. Lamp lighters took great pride in their work, diligently maintaining the lamps to keep cities aglow. Their tasks included lighting and extinguishing lamps, cleaning and replacing faulty parts and performing routine checks to guarantee optimal functionality.
During their heyday, lamp lighters were esteemed for their crucial work. However, the advent of gas lamps marked a significant turning point. With the introduction of self-operating mechanisms, people could easily turn lamps on and off themselves. Consequently, the need for lamp lighters diminished, and their profession gradually became obsolete.
Despite the decline of their profession, the legacy of lamp lighters endures. Their dedication and hard work paved the way for modern street lighting systems, transforming urban landscapes forever. Today, we acknowledge the important contribution of lamp lighters to our urban heritage, remembering their vital role in shaping the cities we know today.
