KARACHI:
A significant upheaval occurred in the country following a violent attack by a banned outfit on security personnel and civilians on August 26, 2024, resulting in nearly 50 deaths. This incident has since left the government perplexed, particularly concerning its largest province by area.
In the aftermath, a meeting took place in Quetta involving key leaders, including Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Army Chief Gen Asim Munir. While specific strategies were not disclosed, reports suggest an increase in the strength of the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD). However, this has rather proved to be a catalyst for widespread protests. Many security analysts argue that the most effective solution over Balochistan lies in political dialogue as a hardline approach is unlikely to resolve the ongoing issues.
Creating space for provincial parties that have substantial public support could help ease tensions. However, it is essential to recognise that merely providing political representation is not enough. Addressing the grievances and ensuring constitutional rights for the people of Balochistan are critical steps toward lasting peace. By granting these rights and supporting local parties and leaders, we can help alleviate the frustrations of the Baloch people.
