KARACHI:
It is often said that a semester lasts six months, yet students quickly discover that most semesters actually consist of only four months and a few days. In many private institutions, the semester duration is even shorter, which leaves students puzzled about why the remaining days seem to go to waste. With mid-term breaks and final examination periods included, these breaks often feel unproductive.
The short duration of semesters in universities impacts students’ ability to cover the entire course material adequately. Classes are held only twice a week and instructors frequently skip important topics, citing the approaching exam dates. As a result, students struggle to grasp key concepts and often feel unprepared for exams, missing out on vital knowledge.
This situation has become a longstanding issue, yet it remains largely unaddressed. We urge HEC to take action by advocating for extended semester durations. This change would allow students to focus on meaningful learning, rather than rushing through the curriculum. A campaign to promote better course coverage in universities would greatly benefit students and enhance their educational experience.
