KARACHI:
The drainage system in Karachi has become a pressing concern, threatening the health and well-being of its citizens. In many areas, stagnant water accumulates, emitting unbearable odours and creating unsanitary conditions. This issue worsens during rainfall, as waterlogged streets become dumping grounds for trash, including plastic bags and food waste.
The lack of proper waste management and drainage maintenance has led to severe consequences. Diseases and infections spread rapidly, contaminating food and water sources, and threatening the citizens’ health. Fruit and vegetable sellers struggle to make a living as their products perish due to the unsanitary conditions. Passersby are forced to navigate through filthy streets. The city’s reputation also suffers, deterring investment and tourism.
Under the circumstances, upgrading and expanding Karachi’s drainage infrastructure is crucial. Regular cleaning and maintenance of drainage systems, implementation of effective waste management strategies and creating awareness on proper waste disposal practices are essential. I, on behalf of the citizens of Karachi, request prompt action to address this critical issue so as to ensure a cleaner and healthier Karachi.
