Agriculture shortage

KARACHI:

Agriculture is the backbone of Pakistan's economy, employing nearly 40% of the population and contributing around 20% to the national GDP. Our fertile lands have long been a source of sustenance, with major crops like wheat, rice, sugarcane, cotton and maize driving our agricultural output. However, this crucial sector is facing severe challenges that threaten our food security and economic stability.
Water scarcity stands as one of the most pressing issues. Pakistan's dependence on river water coupled with inefficient irrigation and changing weather patterns have led to significant wastage. This scarcity not only limits crop yields but also increases the vulnerability of farmers who are already struggling to make ends meet. Furthermore, lack of access to modern technology hampers productivity. Many of our farmers continue to use outdated methods, unable to compete in the global market. The absence of sufficient investment in research and development further deepens this crisis.
To secure our future, it is necessary that the government invests in modern and efficient irrigation systems to ensure that farmers have access to the latest agricultural methods. We must revitalise our agriculture sector and ensure that it remains a pillar of our economy.
