Monsoon rains, while often welcomed as a blessing, can also become a source of devastation when they become extreme. This year’s monsoon season has been particularly severe across Pakistan, especially in Punjab.
Multan experienced an unprecedented 172 mm of rainfall, breaking the city’s previous record of 134.5 mm set in 1976. Similarly, Karachi has been inundated with heavy rains, leading to tragic incidents, including multiple deaths from electrocution. Islamabad and Rawalpindi have not been spared either. In a particularly tragic event, five people lost their lives when the roof of a warehouse belonging to an automobile company collapsed under the relentless downpour. Moreover, in Pind Dadan Khan, a bus from a cement factory was swept off the road by the raging floodwaters, highlighting the widespread impact of this year’s monsoon. These incidents are just a few of the numerous disasters reported daily since the onset of the monsoon. The relentless rain has turned streets into rivers, overwhelmed drainage systems, and disrupted daily life.
To minimise the risks posed by such extreme weather, it is crucial for people to take precautions. Avoiding the use of electrical devices outdoors during rain and limiting unnecessary travel during hazardous conditions are vital safety measures. By adhering to these precautions, we can reduce the risk of accidents and ensure greater safety for all during the challenging monsoon season.
