Dangers of internet

KARACHI:

In the 21st century, the internet, while a powerful tool, is also one of the most dangerous when misused. As of July 2024, about 5.45 billion people, or 67.1% of the global population, are internet users. However, this widespread usage has given rise to serious issues.
The internet is increasingly being exploited for harmful activities such as spreading conspiracy theories, engaging in political manipulation, disseminating propaganda, blackmailing, and even threatening others. These activities contribute to a growing sense of fear and distress among users and are often linked to the concept of fifth-generation warfare, where the internet is a key battleground. According to statistics, Pakistan ranks 26th globally in terms of the number of internet users, with approximately eighty-three million users in 2024, representing about 36% of the country’s population. While the internet offers significant advantages, it also poses considerable risks, as it becomes a breeding ground for misinformation and manipulation.
To address these challenges, it is imperative for the government to strengthen its cybersecurity measures. This includes activating more robust online protections and ensuring that relevant sectors work diligently to safeguard national interests against malicious actors on the internet. Only through concerted efforts can the dangers of the internet be mitigated while harnessing its potential for positive use.
