Co-curricular activities

KARACHI:

Lack of emphasis on extracurricular activities — which are rather called co-curricular activities nowadays — in our education system is an issue that needs attention. These activities offer a wide range of opportunities beyond academics, helping students develop new skills, interests and social connections. They showcase the diverse talents and abilities students possess and how they spend their time outside the classroom. It’s crucial to create spaces that foster this kind of growth, as extracurricular activities not only enhance academic performance but also contribute to a healthy, balanced life and improved mental health.

The academic journey of an average Pakistani student is typically restricted to going to school then to college, and then to university, and finally to job. There’s nothing extraordinary or enriching about this timeline. It lacks opportunities for exploration, discovery and personal growth. There’s little room for students’ other talents to shine. Not every student wants to follow the traditional career path. Many have world-changing ideas and the passion, determination and vision to pursue them. However, they lack the necessary support and resources to turn these ideas into reality, leaving them stuck hoping for success instead of actively pursuing it.

Our education system fails to incorporate the needs of students beyond academics. While we may have good educational content and teachers, it’s essential to rethink and revise our approach. We need to create educational environments that prioritise not only academic excellence but also extracurricular activities. These environments should foster growth, stability, independence and tolerance for new and innovative ideas. We must welcome change and empower our youth to embrace modernity, equipping them to thrive in a rapidly evolving world.

The students are calling for a shift away from a purely bookish culture towards an integrated approach to learning — one that nurtures not just academics but the holistic development of individuals. They seek to become well-rounded, equipped to compete with modern nations, achieve global standards of competence, and ultimately succeed in life. By embracing extracurricular opportunities, we can empower a generation of confident, creative and competent individuals ready to shape a brighter future for themselves and, in turn, make Pakistan great again.
