Deforestation crisis

KARACHI:

Deforestation is not just an environmental concern but a global crisis that threatens the balance of our planet’s ecosystems; the survival of countless species; and the well-being of future generations. Deforestation is driven by several factors, including agricultural expansion, logging, infrastructure development and mining. While these activities may provide short-term economic benefits, the long-term consequences are devastating. Forests play a crucial role in regulating the Earth’s climate by absorbing carbon dioxide.

The loss of forests accelerates climate change by increasing greenhouse gas emissions, which contribute to global warming. This, in turn, leads to more extreme weather events, rising sea levels and other environmental disruptions. Deforestation also affects local communities, particularly indigenous people who rely on forests for their livelihoods, culture and survival.

An immediate and decisive action is needed to combat deforestation. This can be achieved through enforcing the laws that protect forests; promoting sustainable land use practices; and supporting reforestation and afforestation efforts. I request policymakers, businesses and individuals to recognise the gravity of this issue and work together to protect our forests.
