KARACHI:
As WHO declares a global emergency in response to the rising cases of Mpox, it is crucial that we bring attention to this growing concern. The rapid spread of the more lethal Clade 1b strain in Congo, coupled with its potential to cross international borders, demands immediate action to suppress the growing threat.
Mpox poses a significant threat to global health. It is transmitted through close contact, contaminated surfaces and infected animals, requiring heightened vigilance. The symptoms, which range from flu-like signs to painful rashes, can be debilitating and the risk of severe illness is higher for vulnerable groups. The lack of approved treatments and the reliance on antiviral medications for symptom management is troublesome and more investment needs to be made on research. While the WHO-recommended vaccines offer hope, issues of accessibility and awareness remain critical. I urge the people of Pakistan to educate themselves on the virus, its symptoms and prevention measures.
