Ending paedophilia

KARACHI:

In Pakistan, pedophilia remains a serious problem that is often brushed aside. Unfortunately, social stigma and taboos surrounding it make it difficult for victims to come forward and receive the support they truly deserve. Addressing this issue successfully involves several key steps. Education and awareness are crucial as schools and the media must collaborate to educate children on how to identify and report abuse. Broadening public understanding can play a vital role in breaking down the barriers of silence.

To make a real impact, we must strengthen our legal system by tightening penalties for abusers and closing any legal loopholes that might be exploited. Moreover, it is essential to ensure that current laws are enforced with the utmost diligence to protect victims and deter offenders. Another important measure is to establish private and accessible reporting systems. Victims and their families must have a reliable way to report abuse without the threat of stigma or retaliation. Teachers and healthcare providers should also undergo targeted training to better recognise and manage cases of abuse.

Offering psychological support and counselling to survivors is equally important. These services are indispensable in helping victims heal from their trauma and reintegrate into society. Lastly, community engagement is fundamental. While global frameworks for addressing paedophilia are helpful, Pakistan must adapt these strategies to fit our cultural context.
