KARACHI:
As children, we were always excited about celebrating 14th August. We would decorate our homes, wear new clothes and even paint our faces. Life was beautiful back then. However, as we’ve grown older, the excitement has faded. Now, we realise that 14th August is not just about celebrations but about the deeper meaning of independence. Independence is about having the freedom to express ourselves without fear, and being truly independent in every aspect of life, not just possessing our own country.
Given the current situation in our country, it is hard to feel the happiness and joy that this day is supposed to bring. I am not being ungrateful, but rather that I feel a deep sorrow for our nation and for our brotherly country, Palestine, where so many Muslims are suffering. We are powerless to help them. For a few days, social media was flooded with posts condemning Israel’s cruelty, but once the issue was no longer trending, the posts disappeared and so did the outrage. If we are truly independent, why can’t we take action? Do we think that we can’t even afford to speak out on such issues when our own situation is so dire?
When a government works for the people, it leads to progress and well-being. Conversely, when a government is solely focused on holding onto power, the country inevitably falls into crisis. The government must take responsibility for the mandate it was given at the time of election. They should take an oath on Independence Day to make the country truly independent. We, too, should pledge to strive for change. Let us cherish the moment while also working towards making a difference.
