KARACHI:
The floods are not just about rain they are about drainage too. While heavy rain is often blamed for flooding, it is the inadequate drainage system that mainly contributes to the severity of these disasters. Poorly designed or clogged drainage, often exacerbated by rapid urbanisation, can fail to channel water away, leading to flooding even with moderate rainfall. In regions like Balochistan and North Sindh, the lack of developed drainage infrastructure creates ideal conditions for water to accumulate, causing extensive damage.
Pakistan’s weather patterns have shifted dramatically in recent years, placing the country among the top five most affected by global warming. The United Nations estimates that 200,000 Pakistanis could face rainwater floods in the coming season, with upper Sindh and Balochistan at greatest risk, as seen during the 2022 floods. Therefore, it is imperative for the government to take immediate action to upgrade drainage system, invest in flood control measures and work towards a more sustainable future for Pakistan’s vulnerable communities.
