KARACHI:
Arshad Nadeem, the pride of Pakistan, not only secured a gold medal in the 2024 Paris Olympics but also broke the Olympic record with a javelin throw of 92.97 metres, surpassing the previous record of 90.57 metres set 16 years ago. His remarkable achievement has elevated Pakistan’s standing on the global sports stage.
While all eyes are now on this glamorous young athlete, little is known about the struggles that paved the way for his success. Arshad Nadeem faced significant challenges throughout his sporting career. Just five months before the Paris Olympics, he was struggling to obtain a new international-standard javelin as his previous one had worn out. Unfortunately, the Government of Pakistan paid little attention to this sport, leaving Arshad and his coach to fend for themselves. According to his mother, during his early days, it was his family and neighbours who pooled together the money to support his sporting endeavours. It is shameful that the Government of Pakistan neglects its shining stars, focusing only on a few popular sports.
The government must amend its policies and address the flaws in its approach to sports. It should establish a dedicated fund for the development of a wide range of sports and invest in the youth who have the potential to bring pride and respect to the nation — just as Arshad Nadeem, a dark horse and the new Golden Boy of Pakistan, has brought immense joy and pride to the country.
