Career counselling

Career counselling

KARACHI:

One real-life example of the lack of career counseling in the country, especially in rural areas, is when one of my childhood friends and I passed our matriculation from our village school in district Dadu of Sindh. We both had no idea what career to choose based on our talent, and were unsure whether to pursue pre-medical, pre-engineering, or any other field. As many of the students aspired to become doctors, we too — based on this herd mentality — took admission to FSc pre-medical, even though we had no idea about it. Years later, I realised that I should have become a lawyer, but it was too late by then.

There are a large number of rural and urban students like us who wonder what path to take after passing matriculation and intermediate. In this world of technology and emerging sciences, we still lack avenues for career counseling, skills guidance and digital learning at schools, colleges and educational institutions. I think there is need for the authorities to arrange career counseling sessions for students after they have passed their matriculation and intermediate, in order to guide students in the right direction, based on their talent and aptitude. Teachers and parents should play their role in the context.
