KARACHI:
According to a survey, some 282 million people faced abysmal hunger in the past year — largely due to geopolitical crises like the ongoing genocide in Palestine and the Russia-Ukraine war. According to UN officials dealing with food shortages, 18 million people in Sudan are faced with serious food insecurity.
In this changing world order, 3Cs — Conflict, Climate and Cash — have played a crucial role in creating a state of multiple crises for people. Conflicts among elite countries for capturing the resources have laid the basis for food insecurity and shortage. Persistent instability and increased water scarcity have reduced the capacity to produce food. Extreme poverty causes millions of people to die, because of malnourishment and hunger.
Measures like food donations, breaking the cycle of conflicts, and building resilience against climatic problems can help solve the issue of world’s hunger. The World Food Programme can create a state of urgency in hunger-hit areas and provide immediate resources to the affected people.
