Scant EOBI pension

Scant EOBI pension

KARACHI:

EOBI pensioners — comprising elderly people having retired from semi-government and private organisations — are finding it extremely difficult to meet their essential life requirement due to very low pension of Rs10,000 per month. With the cost of food, clothing, utilities, accommodation, healthcare, travelling, etc having increased exorbitantly, the very survival of EOBI pensioners is at stake. It is unfortunate that these senior citizens are being ignored continuously.

In view of the galloping inflation rate, the government has fixed the minimum emoluments of its retired employees at Rs25,000, but no relief has been extended to EOBI pensioners. We request the incumbent government to immediately raise the EOBI pension by a reasonable amount. Since EOBI funds are generated through contributions of employees and employers and the amount is invested to generate profit as well, increasing the pensions of EOBI members would not be a burden on the national exchequer.
