KARACHI:
It is saddened to express my grave concern regarding the pervasive issue of depression among Pakistani youth. Studies reveal a troubling reality: a significant portion of our young population grapples with depression, and this demands urgent attention.
Numerous factors contribute to this alarming trend. The relentless academic pressure, societal norms that impose unrealistic expectations, and the glaring lack of accessible mental health services collectively erode the well-being of our youth.
It is imperative that the government formulate and implement an immediate and comprehensive strategy to address this crisis. Raising awareness about mental health is paramount. The government must take proactive measures to dismantle the stigma surrounding mental illness and foster an environment conducive to open dialogue. Moreover, prioritising the expansion of mental health resources, including qualified professionals, is indispensable. Too many young individuals refrain from seeking help due to financial constraints or the fear of social repercussions.
Educational institutions, too, have a pivotal role to play. Integration of mental health education into the curriculum can empower students with the knowledge and tools necessary to recognise and manage their mental well-being. Additionally, establishing counseling services within schools and universities can serve as a crucial support system for students in need.
In unity, we must endeavour to create a nurturing environment for Pakistani youth. Let us empower them to seek assistance, cultivate resilience and collectively aspire towards a brighter future.
