KARACHI:
Pakistan has long struggled with the pervasive challenges of gender inequality and women’s safety in public spaces. Across cities and rural areas, women face formidable barriers to mobility, education, employment and social engagement due to prevalent harassment, discrimination and limited access to safe transportation. Recognising the urgency of addressing these entrenched issues, the Government of Punjab took a pioneering step over a decade ago by initiating the Pink Bus project in select cities. This initiative aimed to provide women with a safer and more comfortable travel alternative, thereby fostering greater independence and empowerment.
Subsequently, the Pink Bus project garnered attention and recognition, prompting the Government of Sindh to adopt a similar approach in a more systematic manner. Building upon the successes and lessons learned from the Punjab initiative, the Sindh government tailored the Pink Bus project to suit the unique needs and preferences of women in the province. Recent enhancements in the project’s implementation have further solidified its role as a catalyst for positive change.
One notable recent development in the Pink Bus project in Sindh is the implementation of a special fare waiver package by the government. This initiative, which waives off the fare for two months, demonstrates a proactive approach to promoting women’s access to transportation services and removing financial barriers that may prevent them from utilising the Pink Bus service.
The enhancements made to the Pink Bus project extend beyond just financial incentives. The government has also focused on improving the quality of service, enhancing safety measures and expanding the coverage area to reach more women in both urban and rural areas. By investing in infrastructure, training female staff and engaging with local communities, the Pink Bus project has become a cornerstone of efforts to empower women and promote gender equality in transportation.
Equipped with security features such as CCTV cameras and female staff including drivers and conductors, the project ensures the safety and comfort of passengers. The routes are meticulously planned to encompass crucial areas frequented by women, including educational institutions, markets, and workplaces. Additionally, the project incorporates awareness campaigns aimed at educating women about their rights and encouraging them to utilise the services.
