Safe streets initiative

Safe streets initiative

KARACHI:

The insufficient number of street lights in Karachi is disheartening to observe. The issue poses significant problems, as well-lit streets are crucial for ensuring the safety of residents. Insufficient street lighting makes it easier for criminals to engage in illicit activities, posing substantial danger to the residents. People are forced to traverse poorly lit areas, making them vulnerable to robberies and other crimes. Moreover, the scarcity of street lights contributes to a higher frequency of road accidents. This not only threatens lives but also strains our healthcare facilities that are on emergency calls.

Take the example of riverine (katcha) areas. A similar lack of street lighting in these areas is primarily responsible for swelling frequencies of crimes because it makes it difficult for the police to take control of criminal activities while easier for residents to fall trap to crooks.

To address these issues, I urge those in authority to immediately prioritise the maintenance and installation of street lights in Karachi. It is not merely a matter of fixing infrastructure but is rather a critical measure to ensure the safety and well-being of everyone. Sufficient lighting will not only prevent criminal activities but also reduce incidents of road accidents, thereby enhancing the overall safety of our city.
