KARACHI:
One of the most pressing human rights concerns in Pakistan is freedom of expression. In recent years, there have been instances of restrictions on the freedom of media and control of the internet, which have raised concerns on citizens’ freedom to access information and express their opinions. A vibrant democracy thrives on open dialogue, making it imperative for Pakistan to address these challenges to preserve the principles of democracy.
Freedom of expression comes in different forms. It can be for any civilian wanting to have a say on any matter anywhere, to an individual exercising their right to dress up a certain way, or another individual or a group practising their religious faith.
Furthermore, the rights of minorities in Pakistan have been a persistent concern on the same lines. Ensuring the protection of religious minorities and their right to practise their faith without fear of discrimination or violence is crucial. Progress has been made in some areas, but challenges remain. It is vital for Pakistan to continue working towards inclusivity and protection for its citizens. Also, it is imperative that we, the civilians, do not take law and justice in our hands and become self-proclaimed vigilantes to accuse and punish people for how they choose to live. The state gives everyone equal rights to an independent life in Pakistan.
