KARACHI:
The climatic conditions in Pakistan are deteriorating with each passing day. Typically, January and February are regarded as the peak of winter, particularly in mountainous regions. Unfortunately, this year, it is anticipated that these months will transpire without any rain or snowfall. While Pakistan may not be responsible for the worsening environmental conditions, nature does not recognise any boundaries.
Concentrating on development programs while overlooking environmental conditions proves unhelpful. A tranquil environment is crucial for good living conditions. As elections draw near, political candidates are actively campaigning for votes, yet few include environmental and climate change issues in their manifestos. Disregarding these problems will not lead to solutions. The swift melting of glaciers has made water scarcity the norm, compelling people to resort to impure water sources, resulting in various diseases. Abnormal weather patterns also take a toll on mental well-being. Failure to raise awareness among those exploiting nature, through deforestation and excessive resource consumption, exacerbates the escalating crisis. The absence of environmental concerns in political agendas, especially as elections approach, raises serious concerns.
Public awareness campaigns and sessions on the importance of a clean environment and the consequences of climate change should be arranged. Subjects related to the environment should be introduced in schools from the primary level. This will help children grasp the importance of planting trees, adopting sustainable practices with natural resources, avoiding unnecessary wastage of clean water and understanding the need to care for nature. We must recognise that nature may react adversely to those who exploit it.
