KARACHI:
The unprecedented lack of snowfall in Kashmir and adjacent areas raises significant concerns as it reflects not just a challenge for tourism but a potential symptom of a disastrous impact on the region’s economy and environment. The scarcity of snowfall, resulting in nearly a 50% decline in tourist numbers compared to the previous month, deals a severe blow to the tourism sector, which contributes 7% to the region’s GDP.
According to a report by BBC News, this decline has repercussions beyond the tourism industry, affecting the economic, agricultural and water supply sectors. The insufficient snowfall fails to adequately replenish groundwater, posing a threat to farming and water supply. This issue demands special attention and urgently calls for comprehensive climate measures to mitigate the far-reaching effects on the region’s environment and economy. Climate change is not merely an environmental concern but a pivotal factor for the sustainable future of the region and its people.
