How to cook!

Letter January 21, 2024
????

KARACHI:

While low gas pressure has been a problem for years and years during winters in the upcountry where harsh weather conditions increases the use of gas heaters and geysers, now residents even in the country’s south are suffering low or no gas pressure. Karachi, for instance, has never faced the kind of gas supply troubles it has been suffering from this winter season. None of the areas of the city – be they posh or otherwise – are exempt from gas loadshedding.

The situation is worse in my locality, Liaquatabad, and the adjoining neighbourhoods. Let alone geysers, there is no gas to ignite the stoves and cook food almost all through the day. Even if there is some supply, the flame is too low to prepare food. School and office goers have had to leave home without breakfast as it is consuming much more than normal time to prepare meal in the morning. A majority of us have been relying on restaurants and cafes which is proving too heavy on the pockets. And yet, the gas bills are showing no mercy. Many households, as well as businesses, have started relying on LPG cylinders – only to see their cost skyrocketting too. I, therefore, request the authorities to make arrangements for proper supply of gas at least during the cooking hours. This is the least that we the citizens expect of our rulers.
