Strained relations

LARKANA:

The relationship between Pakistan and Afghanistan has been fraught with tension since Afghanistan’s assumption of power post US military withdrawal. Pakistan finds itself embroiled in an upswing of terrorism, primarily attributed to the outlawed TTP, which exploits Afghan soil for its ruthless attacks. In response, Afghanistan’s defence minister alleges that the Islamic State-Khorasan province (ISKP) orchestrates cross-border attacks from Pakistan. These ongoing hostilities, compounded by the repatriation of Afghan refugees, deepen bilateral strains and risk escalating regional tensions.

The dismissive stance of the Taliban government regarding TTP involvement perpetuates sophisticated attacks on Pakistani security forces, paramilitary personnel and infrastructure projects. According to the Centre for Research and Security Studies, Pakistan witnessed 789 terror attacks, with the majority attributed to TTP. A recent brutal attack in Bajaur claimed the lives of six police officials, showing the devastating impact on both countries’ citizens and the potential for fostering animosity.

In this challenging context, collaborative efforts between the governments on both sides of the Durand Line are crucial to eradicate the illicit dominance of TTP. The Taliban government must assume a proactive role in curbing TTP’s activities, representing a significant step towards normalising ties and garnering international respect and recognition. Such an approach is essential for fostering sustainable peace and stability in the region.
