SHAPUK:

Pakistan faces a severe economic crisis compounded by environmental degradation, resulting in significant losses. Experts estimate that environmental degradation could cost the country over Rs365 billion. Without prompt preventive measures, this cost may escalate to Rs450 billion.

Some of the key factors contributing to the decline in environmental quality include the consumption of fossil fuels, trade openness and alarming population growth. Agricultural soil degradation alone amounts to Rs70 billion, while indoor and urban air pollution contributes around Rs132 billion, leading to an annual burden of disease and 22,000 premature adult deaths. Urgent action is necessary to address these issues and implement sustainable solutions to protect both our health and economy.
