Violence against women

Letter January 12, 2024
Violence against women

KARACHI:

Violence against millions of Pakistani women is a serious issue, with common occurrences of gender discrimination, honour killings, sexual assault, acid attacks, etc. Regrettably, this problem often escapes media attention, leaving victims to endure in silence.

Domestic violence, fueled by the birth of daughters and male assertions of dominance, remains a significant contributor to this pervasive issue. Tragically, many women face acid attacks for refusing proposals and some meet a gruesome end by being burnt alive. A recent survey highlighted that over 2,000 Pakistani women lose their lives due to intolerable violence.

Shockingly, such incidents occur nearly daily but often remain concealed, with some even manipulated for political or personal gains. Without condemnation of this issue, countless women will continue to lose their lives. Organisations dedicated to safeguarding women’s rights must be established along with stringent government measures to punish abusers. Concerted efforts can provide women the rightful position and respect they deserve.
