Relocating airport

Relocating airport

KARACHI:

Gilgit-Baltistan (G-B) remains the most neglected region in Pakistan, which is apparent in various aspects of life and Gilgit Airport serves as a notable example of this trend. Despite 75 years passing, the government has faltered in relocating Gilgit airport, leaving the capital without the capability for wide-body planes.

In Pakistan, Gilgit and Chitral airports are particularly precarious, lacking a secondary landing option. I highlighted this critical concern during my time as Secretary of Planning and Development and Finance in G-B. A viable solution could be relocating the airport to the Chilas plains, facilitating the construction of a new facility. Given Gilgit’s status as the capital of GB, it should not be denied this essential need, especially considering its appeal to a significant number of foreign and local tourists.

I earnestly appeal to the Prime Minister and other relevant authorities to promptly address and take action for the construction of a new airport at a suitable location. Strategic relocation and the development of a new airport would not only address the essential transportation needs of the capital but also significantly boost tourism in the region, fostering economic growth and showcasing the unparalleled beauty of Gilgit-Baltistan to a broader audience.
