ISLAMABAD:
In a virtual jalsa that took place while Imran Khan was confined in Adiala Jail, an AI-generated voice addressed the audience. This novel application of AI in politics is a testament to the ever-evolving landscape of technology’s role in shaping political discourse. While AI has found its place in various sectors, its introduction in politics opens up uncharted territory that needs to be explored.
The ability to clone a political leader’s voice and virtually present them to the public is both an exciting and concerning prospect. This moment prompts us to think about how technology can break down barriers and change how politics is communicated. But, as we witness this groundbreaking development, we must also think about the ethical side of using AI in politics. Questions about authenticity, transparency and responsible use of this powerful tool come to the forefront. Also such a use of AI can set a dangerous and exploitable trend. It is, therefore, essential for policymakers and technologists to have discussions about the ethical aspects of AI in politics.
This milestone should prompt the need for conversations and awareness about the impact of AI in politics, not just in Pakistan but globally. As we explore new territories, it is becomes a responsibility to set ethical guidelines for the intersection of technology and politics.
