KARACHI:
Expressing warranted apprehensions, the delegation of election duties to female educators, particularly those associated with the University of Karachi, prompts justified scrutiny. While acknowledging the civic responsibility linked to participating in election duties, it is crucial to acknowledge the diverse challenges and circumstances that female faculty members may confront.
In numerous democracies, individual circumstances often warrant exemptions and accommodations. In the context of Karachi, a city characterised by substantial size and dispersion, the logistical challenges related to travel and accessibility introduce an additional layer of complexity that cannot be overlooked. The potential for an unfavourable law and order situation, especially during elections, exacerbates the issue, emphasising the imperative for a secure environment for all individuals engaged in election duties. Navigating these circumstances may be particularly daunting for female faculty members, given their unique roles and responsibilities. Furthermore, the noteworthy preponderance of male faculty members at the University of Karachi underscores the need for inclusive policies that mirror the diverse composition of the academic community. Balancing research and teaching duties with election responsibilities is already a demanding task and imposing additional burdens disproportionately on female faculty members is unjust and harmful to their academic contributions.
Effectively addressing these concerns necessitates a thorough review and reconsideration of policies related to assigning election duties to female university teachers. This process should encompass providing exemptions or alternative arrangements, considering the specific challenges posed by the city’s size, security concerns and the gender dynamics within the academic community at the University of Karachi. Faculty members must be empowered to fulfil their civic responsibilities without compromising their well-being and professional commitments. Such an approach aligns with the principles of fairness, equity and the overall progress of the academic community.
