KARACHI:
Statistics highlight that one in nine women falls victim to breast cancer with more than 83,000 cases reported annually in Pakistan. The estimate indicates that 40,000 Pakistani women lose their lives to this disease each year. The pink ribbon is prominently displayed everywhere in October as a symbol of global breast cancer awareness.
Unfortunately, despite these efforts, Pakistan has one of the highest mortality rates due to breast cancer affecting not only older women but also younger ones. Approximately 77% of women aged 50 are affected by this disease. This underscores the importance of regular mammograms or physical exams by a doctor every two years.
Women are losing their lives due to a lack of awareness. Women shy away or hesitate to consult a doctor or discuss the matter with elders considering it a personal issue. There is an urgent need to improve awareness about this disease. I urge the government to provide proper medical facilities, especially in rural areas, to save lives.
