Begging menace

Letter December 31, 2023

ISLAMABAD:

In Pakistan, being a beggar has evolved into a career. For every 170 million people in Pakistan, 25 million are professional beggars. Beggars have always been seen as a social sin and a curse on society. Street beggars are a common sight across all our towns and cities, outside mosques, events and any busy place. Challenging economic conditions, high levels of unemployment and poor literacy rates have intensified this problem in Pakistan.

A comprehensive approach is necessary to tackle this widespread challenge. Improving access to education and social welfare programmes can enable people to create sustainable livelihoods. Public awareness campaigns dispelling misconceptions coupled with strict law enforcement against exploitative begging are crucial. To abolish begging, our society must address poverty, advance education and encourage community engagement.
