Gender inequality

Letter December 21, 2023
Gender inequality

KARACHI:

In Pakistan, gender disparity exists in all aspects of society including schools, workplaces and households. This division hinders individuals’ potential and impedes their success. Young girls face numerous challenges in acquiring an education stemming from the lack of accessible learning opportunities and conservative norms and cultures.

Traditional gender norms restrict options and opportunities for women. Those aspiring to pursue a career encounter barriers to advancement and experience income discrepancies in workplaces. Recognising intersectionality is crucial because gender inequity intersects with other forms of discrimination requiring focused efforts to address the challenges faced by marginalised individuals.

Relevant authorities need to ensure that existing laws concerning gender parity are implemented. In addition, there is a need to improve access to education, foster diversity and inclusivity in the workplace and empower systematically marginalised and vulnerable groups. To eliminate deeply embedded inequality, we must dismantle traditional gender stereotypes. Recognising current gaps and actively working to dismantle structural obstacles pave the way for a more welcoming and equal future.
