PINDI BHATTIAN:

Human rights form the fundamental foundation of societies worldwide, and their application is crucial to prevent lawlessness and chaos. In the context of Pakistan, however, prisoners often find themselves marginalised, facing issues ranging from inadequate living conditions to mental health challenges.

Prisoners in Pakistan encounter myriad problems, including inadequate access to food, healthcare, sanitation and mental health support. Among these, a seldom-discussed but critical aspect is the fulfillment of their sexual needs, which significantly impacts both mental and physical health. While this may seem trivial to some, an exploration of prisoners’ perspectives reveals the harsh realities they endure during incarceration. Prison reforms should encompass measures to ensure that the basic human right to maintain a healthy sexual life is not overlooked. Another vital aspect of prison reform involves fostering family connections. Currently, families of prisoners bear the brunt of their loved one’s crimes without adequate support. The government should initiate monthly meetings for family members, allowing them to spend quality time with their incarcerated relatives. This not only supports the families but also aids in the rehabilitation process for the prisoners.

The urgency of prison reforms in Pakistan cannot be overstated. Beyond addressing basic human rights, reforms must encompass the holistic well-being of prisoners, acknowledging and addressing issues related to mental health and family connections.
