Traffic violations

Letter December 17, 2023

KARACHI:

Karachi faces a pervasive issue of traffic violations, which should prompt the local traffic police to launch awareness campaigns as a counter effort. A crucial aspect demanding attention is a widespread campaign to educate drivers, particularly professional ones, about traffic laws. Professional drivers should face substantial fines for violations, and employers must be held accountable, instilling responsibility within the professional driving community.

Ensuring the proper functioning of headlights and taillights is equally crucial in minimising accidents. Many motorcyclists lack basic lighting equipment, endangering themselves and other road users. The blinding brightness of headlights poses a serious concern, leading to discomfort and potential accidents. Regulating and reducing the excessive brightness of headlights is imperative to mitigate the risk of collisions and ensure a more harmonious flow of traffic. Addressing individuals who recklessly go against traffic on one-way streets requires a shift in mindset. One effective measure is the temporary impoundment of vehicles involved in such violations, imposing stringent penalties regardless of ownership.

To tackle traffic violations effectively, Karachi must undertake a comprehensive approach. Educational campaigns, strict penalties for professional drivers, attention to lighting systems, regulation of headlight brightness and targeted measures against wrong-way drivers are essential components of a strategy aimed at enhancing traffic safety. Only through concerted efforts and a collective commitment to responsible driving can Karachi create a safer and more secure environment on its roads.
